Pregnancy
First Steps in Pregnancy
It’s important to see a midwife as early as possible to get the antenatal (pregnancy) care and information you need for a healthy pregnancy.
You can refer yourself for NHS pregnancy care, usually by completing an online form, so you can start your antenatal care with a midwife. If you cannot refer yourself online, check the website of your local NHS trust for details on how to contact nearby maternity services.
Your first midwife appointment should be before 10 weeks of pregnancy. If you’re already past 10 weeks, still refer yourself and start your care as soon as you can.
You only need to tell your GP you’re pregnant if you take medicine or have a long-term health condition. If you’re registered with a GP, they’ll be informed after your first midwife appointment.
Pregnancy Care
Pregnancy care is co-ordinated by RUH Maternity via Chippenham, Frome, Paulton & Trowbridge Maternity Units. Please note Shepton Mallet Community Hospital no longer provides midwife services.
To register for pregnancy care go to the RUH Maternity Contact Us page. Your first appt will be before 10 wks of pregnancy. More info at ruh.nhs.uk/patients/services/maternity/
Badger Notes
Badger Notes is a secure online system and app that lets you view and update your maternity records at any time. It replaces traditional paper notes, giving you instant access to your care plan, appointments, and trusted pregnancy information. You can also record your preferences and communicate with your midwife through the app.
From your first midwife appointment, your notes will be stored digitally, and you’ll receive instructions on how to log in.
